Coulter Burn
After an exciting late Summer wildfire season in Chelan county the PBA completed the Coulter Burn in a very narrow Fall burn window. This burn was planned and managed by the landowner who first attended the Spring Learn and Burn followed by participating in the DNR’s 3 day WA Certified Burner Program. The extension of the county burn ban pushed us right up against Fall rains. The crew showed up on day one but so too did the wind. The burn was called off. But people were willing to come back so the following day we regrouped and pulled the burn off on a much calmer but cloudier day. A lot of new faces participated in this burn along with 3 personnel and an engine from the Chelan 7 Fire Department.
40 Acres
Mesa Meadows
This high elevation burn above the town of Entiat was a real treat. Large firing patterns were used across the landscape’s open meadows and roadways and UTV trails were used as containment lines. The fuels burned off quick and securing the unit was effortless. The objectives of the burn were to reduce thatch, recycle nutrients, and come back in the Spring and monitor.
9 acres
MTN Home Pile Burn
The Chelan Douglas Land Trust completed an 80 acre thinning unit on their Mtn Home property just outside of Leavenworth. This property is often used by locals for its nice trails and overlooks of town. The CDLT in coordination with the PBA brought together 30 volunteers to implement the burn. The PBA looks forward to getting more fire and community members on CDLT lands in the future.
Biochar
A last minute opportunity for biochar. Camp Camrec up the Little Chumstick had a mountain of slash needing to be processed and snow was threatening to fall. The PBA invited out the Leavenworth Discovery High School tob come learn about biochar and flame cap kilns. It was cold and wet but work got done and cocoa and hot dogs were consumed.
